Foreshortening, Part II

Here's the second part of the video lesson on foreshortening.

The drawing above is an example I created for a class, using two different shoes. I like to use women's pumps, because they are simultaneously simple and complex shapes. We all think we know what they look like, but must concentrate to draw them.

New video with double cameras shot and edited by dmovies, with my gratitude...

Foreshortening Drawing Lesson, Part I

Hi Guys!
Here's another drawing lesson.

In the first part I draw a shoe in a flat, non-foreshortened view. I use an underdrawing, then fill in with a combination of gesture, modeling, and some contour lines.

In the second part I draw the same shoe in a foreshortened view (see next post). I try to create the illusion that the toe of the pump comes off the page, into our space.

I hope you enjoy the video, and have a wonderful holiday season!

Blind Contour

Here's the second part of the contour exercises lesson. It's fun. Hope you'll try it yourself!

Continuous Line Contour

Here's the first half of a lesson on classic contour drawing exercises. In this video I show how to create a continuous line drawing, never lifting the pen off the paper. The point is to train your eye and brain to work in new ways.

And I've got the second camera on details now. Enjoy!

I'm Still Here

Sorry I haven't been able to post any new videos yet. My camera man/director/editor, the fabulous Bob Penner of Shadow Productions, is out of the country. When he gets back I'll have new stuff.

Please come back, and in the meantime, enjoy drawing!

Tip:
Go to your local art supply store and buy a small spiral or hard bound sketchbook. Keep it in your bag or car with a pencil for those times when you have to wait for ten minutes. Draw something you see. Forget about being annoyed, and enjoy a creative break!

Draw an Apple with Modeling

Here's the second half of the grayscale gradient video. In it I shade an apple with highlight, core shadow and cast shadow.

Sorry about no close up. I promise two cameras soon, so you can better see what I'm doing.

Happy drawing!

Creating a Grayscale Gradient

When I visit a site that teaches something visual, like drawing, I like to see images, not words. So watch! And please let me know what you think.

Contour and Gesture Drawing

OK, here's the first test of uploading a video to YouTube and posting it on this blog.

This is an edited version of a longer lecture I did on the two basic types of drawing, Gesture and Contour. Contour is a slow, careful style of drawing, in which you carefully draw the outlines of shapes. Gesture is a fast, sketchy type of drawing used to capture motion and quick ideas. Many drawings incorporate a mixture of both gesture and contour.

Please let me know what you think of the presentation. Besides the camera looking up my nose...

Goals of Drawing with Anna

• My main goal for the Drawing with Anna video series is to inspire you to pick up a pencil or pen and start drawing!

• Each video lecture includes technical lectures on skills and demonstrations of those skills.
Easy and fun.

• The lectures are non linear.
You can view them in any order, and can jump in at any time.

**Drawing of face above demonstrates basic proportions of a face. Will post lesson soon!

Hi Guys!

Welcome to the Drawing with Anna Blog.

Drawing with Anna is a series of video lectures that teaches you how to draw.

I believe that everyone can learn to draw, and that drawing is one of the most pleasurable and challenging activities you can do at any age.

This blog connects my short and full-length videos with text and images from my lectures.

Through this blog you can communicate with me. Go ahead, ask me questions. I'll do my best to answer!
